Japan Earthquake Relief

PROJECT #: 3444

Resources:

The Emergency

On New Year’s Day, 2024, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake and subsequent tsunami struck central Japan, causing significant damage to buildings and infrastructure. On January 8th, the BBC reported a death toll of 161, with over 100 people still missing. Rescue and relief efforts have been made difficult by heavy rain and snow, which have triggered warnings of landslides and building collapse. Since the New Year’s Day quake, over 1,200 aftershock tremors have been felt.

The Need

The region most impacted by the disaster has been cut off from the rest of the country. Immediate needs include essential supplies like food, water, gas, electricity, and emergency housing. As response transitions away from the emergency phase, residents will need help rebuilding their homes and businesses. Trauma counselling, and emotional and spiritual care will also become a greater focus as the physical needs become less urgent.

Responding to the Need

In response to the significant need in Japan, Fellowship International missionaries Adam and Sabrina Pietrantonio, already serving in the country, will be working with CRASH Japan as they coordinate local church relief efforts. Funds raised through FAIR’s Japan Earthquake Relief Emergency appeal will empower the local church to share the love of Christ in tangible ways such as distributing immediate relief in the form of essential supplies, help with rebuilding in the months and years to come, and emotional and spiritual care to those affected in their own communities.

Would you consider how the Lord is calling you to respond to this great need?
