Drive three hours and you won't see a church
During my tours in the province of Québec, visiting our churches and pastoral/church leaders, I am constantly reminded of the great spiritual need in Québec. During a tour, I was driving on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River between Trois-Rivières and Québec City, and learned there is only one known evangelical church between these two cities. Think about that for a moment. That would be similar to having no evangelical witness between Vancouver and Hope, BC; Calgary and Edmonton, AB; Winnipeg and St. Boniface, MB; Toronto and London, ON; or Halifax, NS and Sackville, NB. Between two large cities…a couple of hours apart and NO church…no evangelical witness. This is Québec, my friends. I found my heart breaking as I drove past towns, cities, and villages of 5,000 to 15,000 people with absolutely no gospel witness.
Québec remains Canada’s most significant mission field with only 0.8% evangelicals (only 0.3% in Montréal). Very few on the planet are sending missionaries to Québec. There must be such a thing as “theology of proximity.” Québec is close. Québec is our neighbour. Québec is all of our responsibility as Fellowship Baptists.
