Category 6!

Category 5. That’s as bad as it gets, though scientists insist that the current standard for measuring hurricanes (the Saffir-Simpson scale) is inadequate, and that what happened in the Bahamas on September 1, 2019 rated a “6”.  On that date Hurricane Dorian hit the Abaco Islands in the Bahamas with the shattering force of 185 mph (295 km/h) sustained winds. Dorian then stalled just north of Grand Bahama for the next 24 hours. The damage was catastrophic. According to the United Nations, approximately 76,000 people were left homeless. It was the worst natural disaster in the country’s history.

In response to the need, FAIR has partnered with Operation Mobilization (OM) to help address the situation. OM has excellent rapport with the Bahamian government and with the local church. To meet immediate needs, OM was able to distribute hygiene supplies, groceries, and school supplies in Nassau, Abaco, and on Grand Bahama.  According to an OM update, trauma counselling is an important priority, along with clearing the rubble, restoring water and power, and rebuilding homes.

Thank you to our Fellowship donors for their support of the emergency appeal on behalf of the people of the Bahamas. To date, you have contributed almost $16,000 toward relief and rebuilding efforts and we are grateful. Physical restoration will take years. Emotional restoration will also be a long-term concern.
