“India COVID-19 second wave: ‘A coronavirus tsunami we had never seen before.’”
— BBC News (April 15, 2021)
“India's official COVID-19 death toll, which many believe underestimates the true toll, surged past 200,000 on Wednesday. More than 300,000 people have tested positive each day for the past week, overwhelming health facilities and crematoriums… The capital New Delhi [population: 30.1 million] is one of the worst-affected areas, with every third person tested for the virus found to be infected and a new death being recorded every four minutes on average.”

“Densely packed slums like Kirti Nagar sprawl across the capital's suburbs and are home to tens of thousands of impoverished families for whom securing drinking water is a daily struggle and hygienic living conditions a pipedream.”

The news headlines report COVID-19 numbers in India that are beyond comprehension. The health care system is collapsing, and the dead accumulate — bodies are lined up in the streets awaiting cremation. The most vulnerable face lethal choices. When the main breadwinner dies or loses work, families of migrant workers and day labourer’s face hunger, malnutrition, and even starvation. There is no safety net. As one resident from an impoverished Indian region wrote, “We are living at the mercy of God, and if something happens to us, no one is there to look after us.”
This is not God’s heart. The impact of this crisis is devastating, but we will not look away.
FAIR, in partnership with Tearfund Canada, is working through EFICOR (Evangelical Fellowship of India Commission on Relief) to address the needs of some of India’s most marginalized people. Their goal is to partner with local churches in India to help 12,000 families survive until December, praying that by the end of the year, the pandemic will ease. What’s crucial right now is for families to have money to buy food.
You and your church can make an immediate difference in peoples’ suffering and survival.
Would you prayerfully consider how the Lord is calling you to respond to this need?
Your partnership with FAIR to support the work of local churches in India through Tearfund would be an incredible encouragement to the local believers, reminding them that they have not been forgotten during this difficult time.
Please be in prayer:
- Pray for strength and unity for the local church in India as they help people in their communities with urgent need.
- Pray for the Lord’s healing of the nation and that many would find their hope in Jesus.
- Pray for God to give wisdom to leaders at all levels of government and organizations as they care for people.
