Matthew’s passion for youth ministry came as a result of the transformation he saw in his own life throughout his teenage years. The dedicated involvement and support of his youth mentors challenged his faith and encouraged him to pursue the new life that only Christ can give. Youth ministry became the incubator that helped him to explore his identity in Christ, while giving him opportunities to discover where he could be an “instrument” of Truth for the Kingdom of God. It was during these few short years that Matthew discovered his deep desire to stand up for social justice causes, as well as to produce God-glorifying art through music, rap, and writing.
Matthew attended Tyndale University in Toronto, majoring in Biblical studies and theology. It was during this time that Matthew saw an overwhelming need for Jesus in the city of Toronto and he began to understand that quite literally the nations were at his doorstep (Matthew 25:19). After completing a Youth and Canadian Culture course, Matthew began attending Willowdale Baptist Church and became one of the many youth leaders serving at the church.
Matthew writes: “My longing is for the people of Toronto and the (world) to experience in a personal way how much God loves them and knows them. I believe while labouring in the city of Toronto with a focus on youth ministry many people will come to experience Jesus in their everyday life starting in the lives of young people. By developing disciple-making movements through Discovery Bible studies in various youth settings we can truly follow the commands of Christ Jesus when he says: ‘Go and make disciples of all nations.’”
