Kenya
HIV/AIDS is having a devastating impact on Africa as hundreds of thousands die each year from the disease. The financial burden of this pandemic is heavy, particularly for widows and aged care givers left with limited, or non-existent, financial resources to look after the children in their care.
The following projects will assist widows and older care givers as they provide for their families.
It’s Not Chicken Feed, Really
Ten dollars will purchase two hens and food to feed them until they produce enough for the family to sell eggs or to hatch them. More hens can be bought and egg production increased as money is earned. Your ten dollars can make a big difference to the survival of a family. (Submitted by: Andy and Janet Wildsmith)
Cost: $10 for two hens and feed
Chickens Cooped
This coop was designed by a local carpenter who is himself HIV-positive. You can help protect a family's meager
resources by providing for their hens and chicks. (Submitted by: Andy and Janet Wildsmith)
Cost: $50 per coop
Plant a Seed, Reap a Dream
Your funds will be used to purchase enough onion seeds and fertilizer to plant a ¼ acre of land. The funds raised after the harvest can be used to provide school fees or pay for school uniforms. (Submitted by: Andy and Janet Wildsmith)
Cost: $100 per ¼ acre
Healthy Cow Pens
Cows are healthier and more productive when they are not standing in inches of water and mud. Just a few dollars will add better drainage and build a concrete pad in existing cow pens. Your financial help will increase milk production, providing care givers with more milk for their children as well as with more to sell. (Submitted by: Andy and Janet Wildsmith)
Cost: $90 per pen
Celebrate Goat
Goats are easy to feed, multiply quickly, and are in high demand since the 'goat roast' is a common celebration. Goats are also highly marketable when the time comes to pay school fees. Your contribution can provide a family with one female goat. (Submitted by: Andy and Janet Wildsmith)
Cost: $75 each
Ngorika Children’s Home
In many cases children orphaned by HIV/AIDS are left with no one to care for them. They've experienced devastating personal losses and now must find a way to fend for themselves.
Ngorika Children's Home was established to care for the needs of young boys who have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS. Only boys ages six and seven, with no immediate family able to care for them, and who are currently HIV negative are accepted into the home.
A maximum of 16 boys are integrated into a home-like atmosphere under the care of a loving Kenyan family. They will attend school, be part of a functional family and be involved in a local church.
The home has purchased land and livestock for producing, and selling, food. Your gift will be used for providing the boys with such things as: education, health care, and clothing. (Submitted by:
Mark and Catherine Buhler)
Cost: $50 per boy for one month
