Rob was 17 years old when he began attending First Baptist Church, Timmins, ON, and it was there he came to know Jesus Christ as Lord. Kathryn was raised in a Christian home, also in Timmins, ON, and came to faith in Christ when she was five.

While attending college, Rob and Kathryn began to explore the possibility of ministry overseas. They served together in Peru for a summer and in Japan teaching missionary children for one year. Upon returning from Japan, the Flemings began studies at Central Baptist Seminary (now Heritage Baptist College). Their short-term experience as well as the need for evangelical churches in Japan had made an impact on both Rob and Kathryn.

In June 1992, Rob and Kathryn were accepted for career service and departed for Japan in January 1994. In the early years they focused their time and efforts on establishing a multiplying church in the city of Hitachi, an industrial city of 200,000, 150 km north of Tokyo. In 2005 the church appointed a national pastor to give leadership to this church plant.

In January 2006 the Flemings began new church planting endeavors in Hitachi-Shi located about 20 minutes from Hitachi City and in 2015 the Flemings relocated to Tokyo where they are involved in church planting.

Rob and Kathryn have three children: Tess, Graydon and Julia.
