•    April 14—south Japan rocked by 6.4-magnitude earthquake.
•    April 16—a heavy 7.8-magnitude earthquake hits coastal Ecuador.
•    April 16—a second larger earthquake (7.3-magnitude) strikes South Japan.

The deadly earthquakes in Ecuador and Japan have received world-wide attention as relief and recovery efforts continue. FAIR is working to provide relief to those devastated in these regions of the world.

JAPAN:

FAIR - Appeals - FAIR Japan map spring 2016On April 14 and 16, 2016 the south-western island of Kyushu in Japan was hit by a pair of deadly earthquakes measuring 6.4 and 7.3 respectively on the Richter scale. BBC reports that at least 44 people were killed, over 1,000 injured, and at least 100,000 living in emergency shelter locations. Hundreds of aftershocks, cold temperatures, heavy rains and a risk of more landslides have only added to the misery of survivors.

Fellowship International missionaries, Rob and Kathryn Fleming and Steve and Jacquie Willson, who serve in Japan were not in the region most affected by the Kyushu earthquakes, and are unharmed.

The Flemings report: “We are thankful to say that this time we are fine, and did not even feel the Kyushu earthquakes over the past couple of days, since Kyushu is about 1,200 km away. We invite you to pray with us that the people of Kyushu and the rest of Japan would see God and experience His amazing grace amidst another natural disaster.”

ECUADOR:

FAIR - Appeals - FAIR Ecuador map spring 2016On April 16, 2016 the Pacific coast of Ecuador was hit by a magnitude-7.8 earthquake. Initial reports indicate at least 443 people were killed, more than 4,000 injured and 231 are still missing. These numbers are expected to rise. Thousands have been left homeless as many buildings have been flattened by the initial quake and aftershocks; survivors are vulnerable to dirty drinking water and disease. This disaster comes at a time when Ecuador as an oil-producing country has been struggling economically from the global crude price slump, and reconstruction costs are projected to be in the billions.

FAIR’s Response:

FAIR is working with Fellowship International missionaries and partner organizations to support relief efforts and alleviate the suffering caused by the earthquakes that affected the Kyushu Island of Japan and the Pacific coast of Ecuador.

How can you help?

Please pray for those impacted by these events. Pray that relief efforts will efficiently and quickly reach those who have the greatest need. We encourage you to consider giving financially towards this need as well. When we work together by giving as the Spirit leads us, we can help alleviate the suffering felt by these peoples.
