Antonio and Hélène Bascuñan
Home Church: Longueuil, QC
Antonio was born and raised in a Catholic family in Chile. During his early 20s, with no purpose or direction in his life, he left home in search of meaning, winding up in Lima, Peru. Without any money or a place to stay he tried in vain to find food to eat and a place to sleep. He recalls a conversation with someone who described to him how a loving God would meet his needs. In desperation, Antonio cried out to God, promising not to leave Him if God would only love him and guide Him. The next day he walked down the street and came to Primera Iglesia Bautista de Lima (a Baptist church in Lima). They invited him in and gave him a place to sleep. The caretaker at the church shared the Gospel with Antonio and gave him a New Testament. Two days later, Antonio asked Christ into his life.
Much has happened since that life-altering moment in Peru. Antonio came to Canada where he met Hélène. They got married and had two daughters, Pamela (1981) and Claudia (1982). Before becoming a pastor of a Spanish-speaking church, he served in his home church (first in Chibougamau and later in Granby) as the youth leader. He also served in evangelism and studied theology with SEMBEQ.
When Hélène was seven years old her parents came to Christ and began raising their family to honour and fear the Lord. The following summer, Hélène attended a Christian camp. During that time she accepted Christ as Lord of her life. When she turned 16, Hélène became involved in several areas of church life—teaching Sunday school, Good News Bible clubs, etc. She was involved in women’s ministry promoting special activities in the province of Quebec and organizing conferences and retreats.
The Bascuñans completed a short-term assignment (2002-2004) with their two adult children, Pamela and Claudia, in Medellin, Colombia, working in the area of church planting (evangelism, leader training, administration, children’s camp, etc.).
Following the Lord’s leading, Antonio and Hélène applied and were accepted for long term service with Fellowship International in Chile. They have partnered with the congregation in Viña del Mar and are currently in San Felipe, Chile where they have planted a daughter work and are involved in outreach, evangelism, discipleship, leadership training, teacher training, music, etc.
